A Play by Leonel
| CHARACTERS: |
Lit, the Lion……………….King of the Jungle, Age 31
Q, the Mountain Lion……Lit’s best friend, Age 31, one month younger that Lit
(Their friendship has been for almost their whole life, because when they were young, both of their parents got killed by the Rhinos.) |
| SETTING: |
|
| TIME: |
|
| AT RISE: |
In the Jungle, in the middle of the day. You can’t really see the sun because the trees are blocking the sun, but you can feel the daylight. There’s trees all over, behind them and in front of them. |
So this is how the play starts. Lit and Q are sitting right next to each other in a bench, and they’re both sleepy because they just took a long nap and had a long day at work. They were hunting for zebras for other animals, and they get paid Juny-Booneys, and Juny-Booneys are little wrappers that animals can buy food with. So they start talking about how Lit wants to kill Rhinos that killed his parents.
LIT
Hey, Q.
Q
What do you want, Lit?
LIT
You remember that the Rhinos killed our parents, because they ruled the jungle, and they were very powerful and well respected by other animals?
Q
Yeah. Why?
LIT
Well, I was just wondering if you wanted to go kill the Rhinos, because they’re in the jungle visiting the monkeys, and I heard that they were moving to another jungle in another state, so I was just wondering if you wanted to, you know, go kill them, before they moved to another jungle.
Q
Well, I don’t think I should, because I don’t want to have to live my life as a killer! So, you know, I don’t really want to do it.
LIT
Well, in case you didn’t know, I have ten friends, and they want to kill the Rhinos too, because they hate them! And I do not know why they hate them- but they want to kill them- that’s all I know.
Q
That doesn’t matter if they want to kill them or not. Just because they want to kill them doesn’t mean you have to go kill the Rhinos with your friends!
LIT
But they killed our parents! That’s the most important part of me
wanting to go kill them- so whatever you say or ask me- I’m still
going to go kill them.
Q
But you don’t have to because you can really, really get hurt! Like
remember that friend that we had, Leo? You remember that he got
killed because he got into a fight with the monkeys?
LIT
Yeah, why?
Q
Well, I had a dream the other day. And the dream was about you
fighting the Rhinos. And you got killed by them.
LIT
I don’t really care if I die, as long as I get them good, that’s all that
matters.
Q
But I do. And if you fight and you die, that’s really gonna break
my heart because you know that I love you and I care for you like
my big brother.
LIT
Yeah, that’s true. You know I love you just like my younger
brother, and I care for you…and you know they killed our parents!
And because of that, I’m never gonna forgive the Rhinos that did
it. So I’m gonna go do somethin’ and be a man of my word.
Q
No! Please don’t do it. Because I don’t want you to die, like our
friend Leo.
LIT
Well, I’ll see you later. I have to leave right now. My friends are
about to go kill them, so are you coming or not?
Q
No! Don’t leave, because I’m not going with you. I don’t want to
die. I still want to live.
LIT
See, that’s what’s wrong with you! You don’t want to kill the
Rhinos and you know that they killed our parents! So why
wouldn’t you want to kill them?
Q
Because, I forgave them.
LIT
Well you forgave them, but I didn’t. So they’re about to leave in
twenty minutes, and I have to leave right now. So, I’ll see you
later.
Q
How do you know if there’s going to be a “see you later”? What if
you get killed out there?
LIT
There ain’t no “what ifs”. I know I’m gonna live and I know I’m
gonna see you later. So please, get away from me and go
somewhere till I come back!
Q
No! Please don’t go!
(Q starts crying)
LIT
I already have it planned out, so please, don’t worry!
Q
What happens if your plan doesn’t work?
LIT
If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, and I’m gonna give it a try, and
I don’t care what you say.
Q
You don’t care about what I say, but you do care about what I feel.
If you die, I’m gonna have a lot of pain and I’m gonna have a lot
of stress in me. And I’m not gonna have a friend to release my
stress and let it all out. And I’m not gonna have a friend that I can
trust, that I can share my house and my food with.
LIT
Then you can find another friend, because whatever you say, I
already told you, I’m still going. Now, hurry up and say what you
gotta say, OK?
Q
If you fight and you survive, I don’t want you to come back to the
house and live with me, because I know for sure that you’re gonna
get hurt, and I don’t want to take care of you. Just like you didn’t
listen to me, I’m not gonna take care of you.
LIT
Well, you know what? Don’t take care of me! I don’t care! Our
friendship is over!
Q
How are you going to let our friendship fall down like that?
LIT
Well, you’re the one that doesn’t want to go and kill the Rhinos
with me, and you’re over here complainin’ about what I want to
do.
Q
I’m asking you not to do it, because I don’t want you to die or get
hurt!
LIT
But if I get hurt, it’s my problem, not yours! So don’t even worry
about me, because I’m not gonna get hurt!
Q
But what if you do get hurt? Then what are you gonna do?
LIT
You know what, Q? I’m tired of talking. I just wanna go and fight
them right now. So, Bye. I’ll see you later.
(Q Holds Lit)
Q
Don’t leave!
(Lit pushes him off and runs away. Q stays back and cries.)
